Hold on to your reindeer, guys – it’s Christmas next week. And while the window of merriment will be over before we know it, there’s still two months of winter to enjoy some atmospheric, icy parts of the world.
We’ve got plenty of ideas about where you should be headed this winter, whether that’s to these sunny spots for a much-needed hit of vitamin D or to Europe’s ‘hygge’-filled destinations that do winter well. And so, too, does the Telegraph.
The paper has just published a list of the world’s best ‘winter wonderlands’, a list of chilly vaycays inspired by the rising popularity of cool-cations (searches for ‘cooler holidays’ have seen a 300 percent increase in searches this year, according to Google Trends data).
A wide net was cast for the list, which includes everywhere from a tiny Arctic town to the entire country of Japan.
Need to warm up? Head to Tampere, a spot primed for you to enjoy Finland’s UNESCO-protected sauna culture. The city is located in the Finnish Lakeland and has over 60 public saunas, including the Rajaporrti, which is 118 years old.
Yukon, a wilderness-filled territory in the northwest of Canada, is thought to be one of the top places to make the most of the ‘once-in-a-decade’ Northern Lights that we’re set to be experiencing until mid-2025. So, if glimpsing the aurora borealis is on your bucket list, this place should be on your radar.
Iceland is also included on the Telegraph’s list, and while everyone and their mum have considered travelling to the country in the cooler months already, it is a pretty spectacular destination – have a read about why Reykjavik is such a brilliant spot to base yourself.
These are the world’s 10 best ‘winter wonderlands’, according to the Telegraph
- Alta, Norway
- Tampere, Finland
- Yukon, Canada
- The Swiss Alps
- The Dolomites
- Japan
- Alaska
- Scotland
- Iceland
- Wyoming
